Softball Wraps Up Road Trip with Sweep Over Virginia State

PETERSBURG. Va.- The Setters wrapped up their spring break road trip with a sweep over Virginia State University. Pace took the opener 8-0 in six innings, while taking the nightcap 9-4. The Setters improve to 9-1 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 8-10 overall.

The Setters jumped out to a lead in the opening inning as Nicole Schultheis (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) singled and Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free) was hit by a pitch. They both stole a base and scored on a double by Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic). In the third, Wright led off the inning with a solo homerun.

Pace tacked on two more runs in the inning as Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) doubled and later scored on an error. Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) reached on an error and scored on a double byKim Duffy (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon).

The Setters added a pair of runs in the sixth to lock up the win. Colby Hochmuth (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) tossed a complete game, allowing one hit in six innings and struck out two as she improved her record to 2-0. 

In the nightcap, Pace scored a run in the second inning but the Trojans rallied with two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Setters broke the game open in the fourth as they pushed across five runs. Shea had an RBI single, while Sabrina Gonzalez (Oxnard, CA/Ventura College) and Schultheis both had two-run doubles as Pace jumped in the lead at 6-2.

In the fifth, Wright blasted a solo homerun but Virginia State added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as Pace led 7-4. The Setters pulled away as they added two insurance runs in the seventh to complete the sweep and a successful road trip.

Wright went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with a double, two homeruns and three RBI’s. In game two, Kayla Hill (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) tossed four innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out three to improve to 2-0 on the season. Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) closed out the final three innings, allowing two runs on one hit, while striking out three. 

The Setters return to action on Tuesday, March 20 when they will host the College of Saint Rose for their Northeast-10 Conference opener on the at 3 pm.


Baseball Wraps Up Florida Road Trip With 6-1 Win over Stonehill

WINTER PARK, Fla.- The Setters wrapped up their spring break Florida road trip on a strong note as they defeated the Skyhawks of Stonehill College 6-1. Pace improves to 7-6 overall, while Stonehill falls to 11-6 on the season.

The Setters jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) singled and stole second. Roemer came around to score the first run of the on a single by Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick). Pace rallied in the second as Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) and Chris Gili (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) singled to move Collins to third.

Gili advanced to second on a wild pitch to set up two runners in scoring position. The Setters capitalized as Roemer singled in Collins and Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) drove in Gili with a sacrifice fly. 

Pace tacked on a run in the fourth and the fifth but Stonehill scored a run in the fifth as the Setters led 5-1. The Setters added an insurance run in the ninth as Turnier singled, stole second and scored on a double by James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton).

On the hill for Pace, Jonathan Silva (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) tossed five innings, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out five as he improved to 2-1 on the season. Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) pitched two scoreless and hitless innings as he struck out two. Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) came on for the final two innings and didn’t give up a hit or run.

The Setters return back to the Northeast next week as they will travel to Bridgeport, CT for a non-conference game against the University of Bridgeport. The teams will play at Harbor Yard, home of the Bridgeport Bluefish, for a game on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 pm.
