Setters Drop to Non-Conference LIU Post

Pace women came up short in a non-conference match-up.

Pleasantville, N.Y. — The Setters fall to the Pioneers of LIU Post in a non-conference match-up, 43-53. The Setters stand at 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Pioneers advance to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the East Coast Conference.

The Setters came out strong on a 11-1 run to start the first five minutes, seeing their largest lead of the game at 15:56 on a layup by Brianna Harris (Brentwood, NY / Mary Louis Academy). The Pioneers slowly crept up on the Setters and took their first lead at 7:03 on a triple. Two jump-shots by Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY / Long Island Lutheran) managed to keep the Setters within three points but the Pioneers finished on a 5-0 run to cap the half at 26-18.

LIU Post scored six more points in the paint than the Setters as well as two more off of turnovers, fast breaks and second-chance attempts. The Pioneers bench also put up five points.

The Setters started off the second half with two good jumpers from Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane), and one from Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY / Cornwall Central) to lessen the deficit to two points. The score would tie at 14:56 and then again at 14:17 before the Pioneers would go on a 10-0 run halfway through the second half.  LIU Post maintained a healthy lead throughout the rest of the half, taking their largest lead, by 12, with 2:16 left in the game.

Though Pace was unable to make the second-half comeback, the Setters out-shot LIU Post 16-4 in the paint and 10-7 off of turnovers. The Setters shot 37.3% from the field, 22.2% from three-point range and 60% from the foul line while the Pioneers finished at 28.6% from the field, 26.1% from the outside and 68.8% from the line. 

Chelsea Williams led the Pioneers with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and no turnovers. Shayna Gatling and Samantha Kopp recorded nine points, with Kopp also adding seven rebounds and four blocks. Alexis Peters lead the boards for the Pioners with nine, also adding eight points.

Despite the loss, Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY / Pawling) led the Setters with 12 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Shields totaled nine points, four rebounds and four assists, while Sher recorded nine rebounds, six points, three steals and two blocks.  Cleary tallied eight points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists on the day. 

The Setters will travel to St. Thomas Aquinas for non-conference action on Saturday, December 15 for a 1 pm match-up.
