Setters Fall to New Haven, 4-1

Baseball teams fall to 11-7 overall this season.

Pleasantville, N.Y.-The Setters were unable to hold off consistent hitting from the Chargers of New Haven University in conference action on Wednesday as they fell 4-1 to the division rivals. The Setters are now 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the NE-10 while the Chargers advance to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. 

The Chargers got on the board early as they brought a runner in on a couple hits in the first inning to earn a 1-0 lead.

A double in the third inning allowed for the Chargers second run of the game to put them up 2-0 before Brandon Matineson (Prospect, KY / Warwick NY) hit the cutoff in Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT / Westhill) that threw the third out of the inning at home plate. 

The Setters offense saw action in the bottom of the fourth as Martineson tallied the first hit for the Setters and doubled to left field to put the Setters in scoring position. James Pjura then singled to right center to put Martineson at third. Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY / Sachem East) tallied the lone RBI on a single that brought Martineson home for the Setters to put them on the board, but still down, 2-1.

The Chargers responded with a run on three hits in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead, 3-1. New Haven went on to score a run in the seventh inning to solidify their lead, which would be the eventual last run scored of the game. 

Chris Gili (Manorville, NY / Eastport-South Manor) went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Solomeno tallied the sole RBI. Robert Rizzitelli (Monroe, CT / Masuk) struck nine batters out in seven innings pitched for the Setters. Tim Deegan (Levittown, NY / Kellenberg Memorial) came in on relief where he saw one hit and one strike-out. 

Catcher Joe Romanelli had a successful day as he went 4-for-5 at the plate, scored a run and tallied three RBI's. Taylor Candage earned his third win for the Chargers as he struck out four batters in seven innings. Peter Jay came in to close for his seventh save of the season. 

The Setters will travel to St. Rose this weekend to play a 3:30 pm game on Friday, March 29 followed by a double-header on Saturday that will start at 12 pm.
