Women's Soccer: Mercy Tops Pace in Season Opener

The college sports' season is underway in Westchester County.

The following is from the Pace University Department of Athletics:

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.- The Pace Women's soccer team fell in their season opener 4-2 to the Mavericks of Mercy College. The Setters open the season at 0-1, while Mercy improves to 1-0.

The Setters got off to a strong start as sophomore Geena Kooner (Hopewell Junction, NY/ John Jay) netted the first Pace goal of the season in the 24th minute. Mercy evened the score at one in the 42nd minute but the Setters took the lead less than two minutes later. Jillian Ferro(Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) scored her first goal of the season off a Seanna Wright(Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington)  assist to give the Setters a 2-1 lead at the break.

Mercy netted the equalizer early in the second half in the 59th minute. The Mavericks added the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute and added a penalty kick goal in the 81st minute of play.

For the Setters, Ferro and Kooner each netted a goal, while Wright added an assist for Pace. In net, Courtany Hagen (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) totaled five saves in 90 minutes of play

The Setters are back in action on Sunday, September 2 when they will take on Queens College at 3 pm at Pace's Briarcliff campus.
