Make Soda in One Easy Lesson at Stone Barns

NYC may be talking about a , but no one should have any problem with this:

Representatives of the Brooklyn Soda Works will conduct a two-hour workshop at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture June 30 to explain how to make refreshing carbonated beverages with juice from fresh-squeezed seasonal ingredients.

Using produce and ingredients available locally attendees will learn how to extract flavors from herbs and combine them with summer fruits such as currants and berries, possibly in unexpected ways in order to create customized beverages. The basics of carbonation will also be taught.

Brooklyn Soda Works was formed in 2010 by an artist and a research chemist. The pair has created over 40 different flavors of carbonated juices, using fresh local ingredients and flavor combinations not overly sweet.

The supplier's soda product line includes grapefruit/jalapeno with honey, raspberry and mint, rhubarb/Thai basil and lemon/pink peppercorn with thyme. It also markets spicy ginger beer.

Ingredients and produce are available at the Center's farm market open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Attendees at the June 30 program should be 14 or older. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. The registration cost is $40.

The workshop is part of an ongoing program intended to increase pubic awareness of various types of healthy, seasonal and sustainable food.
