Abinanti Joins Parents in Calling for Regents’ Accountability

“Regents are public officials - their views should be publicly known and they should be judged on their views,” said Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Greenburgh/Mt. Pleasant) today as he joined the NYS Allies for Public Education in calling for New York State Regents to be held accountable for the educational policies they put in place.

“Being a Regent is not an honorary position,” said Assemblyman Abinanti. “It takes sensitivity to the needs of children and an understanding of competing educational policies to do what’s right for the children of the State of New York.”

NYS Allies for Public Education, a coalition of concerned parents and community leaders, called on members of the Board of Regents who are seeking re-appointment by the Legislature in 2014 to publicly clarify their positions on Common Core, high stakes testing, and the uploading of student information to the inBloom cloud.

“Just because they’ve been there, doesn’t qualify them to stay there,” said Assemblyman Abinanti.
