Family Remembers Chappaqua's Bert Sugar

Daughter, wife, describe the late boxing writer and his connection to the area.

Bert Sugar's family remembers the hall of fame boxing writer as outgoing and involved in the community. "He was really good in a crowd," said daughter Jennifer Frawley. A Chappaqua resident of about 45 years, Sugar died Sunday night of cardiac arrest and had lung cancer, said his wife, Suzzane. He was 74. He started chemotherapy treatment in October and even in the last few months he continued to write, Frawley said, explaining that he also was happy when people called. She spoke of his intelligence and his love of sports. Suzzane Sugar remembers a husband who loved boxing and who was involved with the Chappaqua Drama Group. Whitney Houston's Last Hurrah

The deceased pop star appears in the film "Sparkle," which is slated for release in August.

Hoping to launch a career comeback, famed singer Whitney Houston joined the cast for the remake of the 1976 movie Sparkle, which is being released by Sony Pictures on Aug. 17. She stars alongside American Idol season six winner and platinum-selling singer Jordin Sparks as the mother of three sisters who must deal with the difficulties of fame as their singing careers take off. Houston's final music recordings will be heard in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She sings the gospel classic Eyes on the Sparrow and duets with Sparks on the new R. Briarcliff Manor's Jody Carilli Dies at 65

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday morning.

The following is from Dorsey Funeral Home: Joanne (Jody) C. Carilli, a resident of Briarcliff Manor, passed away Wednesday Feb. 8, 2012. She was born in Yonkers on Nov. 19, 1946 and was the daughter of Charles and Claire (Nelon) Wilkens. She was 65. Joanne (Jody) is survived by her husband Roger; her father Charles Wilkens; her son Jamie and wife Wendy and daughter-in-law Angelina; her siblings Mary and husband Robert Cannon, Charles (Buddy), Jeffrey and Christopher; three grandchildren, Amanda, Laila and Grace and several nieces and nephews. Brewster Businessman Dies at 66

Beecher Funeral Home provided the following information: Norman Staples Brundage (Buck to all who knew him) died Wednesday, Jan. 11 in Ossining after a brief battle with cancer. Buck was born on March 11, 1945 in Hutchinson, KS, to Arthur F. and Catherine Staples Brundage. He grew up in Pleasantville and graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1963. He served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969. During this time, he was stationed in the Philippines and Vietnam and was awarded a bronze star. On Sept. 8, 1979, he married Sonja Johnson in Darien, CT. Since 1985, they have lived in Brewster where Buck operated his own audio recording business. Firefighters Mourn Death Of 54-Year-Old Mount Vernon Firefighter

Kevin Townes died of an apparent heart attack.

Westchester firefighters today mourn the loss of one of their own, 54-year-old Mount Vernon firefighter Kevin Townes, who died of an apparent heart attack at the scene of a house fire this morning. Townes, a 25-year veteran of the fire department, was one of more than 20 firefighters who raced to the scene of a fire early this morning on Lorraine Avenue. Fire officials said Townes collapsed suddenly and died at Mount Vernon Hospital despite efforts to revive him. Officials noted that Townes had recently passed a mandatory physical exam and city officials said the married father of three children was one of the city's outstanding firefighters. In White Plains, firefighters there were quick to post a note about Townes on their Facebook page…

Remembering Steve Jobs, American Icon

One of Silicon Valley's greatest electronics and computer-industry pioneers succumbs to pancreatic cancer.

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, now Apple, Inc., died on Wednesday, about 9 months after he began phasing out his leadership of the company. When I was an electronics and computer-industry editor and conference director, I met with and interviewed Jobs on many occasions. He was to technology and Silicon Valley what Washington Irving was to American literature and Hudson Valley — a person capable of extending the boundaries of their profession well beyond what had ever been done before. Mary Lobien, of Pleasantville, Passes Away at 91

Family to receive friends tomorrow.

From Beecher Funeral Home: Mary Lobien passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of September 15, 2011. Mary was born to John and Georgiana McGurk in Newark, N.J. on March 23, 1920 and lived in Pleasantville for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband Chester, sisters Margaret and Georgiana, and brother John. She is survived by her children Georgieanna and Alan, her grandchildren Michelle and Brent, her daughter-in-law Christine, her son-in-law Richard Scheuerman, her niece Margaretann Smith and her nephew James Smith. The family will receive friends at the Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville on Saturday from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Interment will be at Locust Grove Cemetery in Quakertown, NJ.

Former Pleasantville Pastor Passes Away in Ohio

He worked at the Pleasantville church for a decade.

From the Pleasantville Chamber of Commerce: The Rev. Arthur Joseph Payne, O.P. died at Mohun Health Care Center of the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Columbus, Ohio, on July 24th. Father Joe, as he was known in Pleasantville, was an active member of the Pleasantville Chamber of Commerce. He was assigned to Holy Innocents in Pleasantville in 1994 and appointed Superior of the Dominican community and Pastor of the parish in 2001, stepping aside after three years because of declining health. The Dominican Friars will receive Father Joe's body at 7 p.m. today, July 27, at Holy Innocents Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, followed by interment in the Dominican Plot in All Souls Cemetery, …
