Going green can often help sell a home more quickly.
Many households still tend to shy away from adopting green living habits for fear they’ll be too hard, time-consuming, or expensive. In reality, there are many green habits that are easy, inexpensive, and will help you sell your home faster. Cutting down on energy usage is often a great way to save money. Do you know that many buyers today will ask a seller how much they pay each month on their utilities? Some might even go so far as to ask for copies of the homeowners utility bills. In order to make this often large amount of money seem more reasonable, going green can help. Consider “greening” up your appliances. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, getting rid of old and outdated appliances can save thousands of dollars per…

My stays at the hospital have been few and far between. During my rare visits, I was in-and-out, leaving with either a cast on my left leg or assurance that I do not have appendicitis. Every year, millions of Americans and citizens of other developed nations go to the hospital with minor ailments, but unlike me, they end up in a struggle for their lives. Hospitals throughout the developed world are being plagued by hospital-acquired bacterial infections. However, funding is woefully inadequate to even begin to tackle this gargantuan problem. Augmenting the problem is the fact that hospitals limit the information that they reveal regarding hospital-acquired bacterial infections, even though these infections are the third leading cause of …

The author emphasizes the power of the apology.
I confess. As a child, I was bullied on a fairly regular basis—sometimes physically, but usually a verbal attack—because I was always the “new kid.” My dad was a salesman and we relocated to where the work was. It wasn’t unusual for us to move on a yearly, sometimes bi-yearly, basis. Clearly, I was an easy target. But thanks to my family, and a few loyal friends, I survived pretty well. Personally, I try to use my life experiences as character builders, but I must admit that if I had the choice I would have skipped more than a few of them. They were quite painful, emotionally if not always physically, and I’d be just as happy if they’d never happened. So when my son came home with stories of being bullied, it really hit home. And if you've…

“The monster isn’t under the bed. It’s in the fridge.” And apparently, now it also lurks in the computer. The haunting idea behind this statement echoes as reality in the minds of up to 24 million people in the United States, and this isn’t because they’re dieting for the upcoming swimsuit season. Instead, it’s because they’re suffering the effects of eating disorders. However, recent studies have now shown that there is likely a correlation between the use of Facebook and the development of eating disorders. And while it may seem hard to fathom such a relationship at first, upon further examination the correlation is more obvious than one would initially suppose. While eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia have existed long …

Owner Michael Grant thanks the community for its support of the coffee shop.
The following was written by Black Cow Coffee Company Owner Michael Grant: May 16th, one year ago today, we opened the doors to The Black Cow Coffee Company, 7 Wheeler Ave., Pleasantville; taking over the location of the closed Dragonfly Cafe. From day one, we knew Pleasantville was the perfect fit for our business. A wonderfully vibrant community that seemed completely open to what we do. My wife Peggy and I had for years been thinking of opening a second store and actually looked 12 years ago at this exact space. As we were weighing our options, the Dragonfly took the chance and opened. Ten years later the space became available again and we just felt we had to take it. The opportunity came to us. With the closing of the Dragonfly, the …

Here we go again: the real issue at the center of any debate over 'modern motherhood' is exploitation.
You don’t want to look at it, but you can’t look away. God forbid your children see it, what will happen when they view such a corruptible, sensational image?! Oh my, it’s a breast! With a child old enough to walk, talk and ask for food attached to it. A child doing what children are meant to do. Getting attention. That’s right, the biggest—perhaps only—winners in this cover story on breastfeeding and attachment parenting are Time magazine’s publicity, marketing and circulation departments. That’s what the cover image was designed to do: Get attention. And it has gotten lots of attention. Blogs, news websites, network news shows...you name it, everyone has weighed in on the 'controversial' articles and accompanying photos. It's been almost…

America is the country of the equal and the free. That’s exactly why there’s gender equality, too—but wait. Of course, women have gained suffrage, access to equal education, higher wages, etc. in this country—privileges that are still merely dreams for unfortunate women in other parts of the world. But in modern America, gender equality legally exists. Then surely there must be equal opportunities for both men and women to speak their mind. However, can we really claim both genders get equal say in these united states of America? The ugly truth is, as America’s women take one step forward, conservative Republican men turn to politics to try to push them three steps backward. It’s everyone’s favorite culture war: birth control and abortion…

Doug is looking for a home.
From the SPCA of Westchester: Doug is a young, energetic and extremely goofy American Bulldog mix. He has the biggest smile you have ever seen…it is very endearing! Doug is young, so he has lots of energy and just needs some basic training. He loves everyone he meets and just wants to give you kisses and play! He will make a great family dog for an active family!

Imagine being able to shoot a person in cold blood because you feel threatened and then retiring back to your home with the murder weapon, but sans arrest. Well, you don’t have to imagine this scenario at all, because it occurred on Feb. 26, 2012. In a case that is sweeping the nation, the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman has ignited fervor on Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. This law, which has coined the nickname “Shoot first,” “grants immunity to anyone who uses deadly force in the name of self-defense.” It is the reason Zimmerman has not yet been arrested and still possesses the handgun used to kill unarmed Trayvon. Zimmerman may be able to get all charges dropped before the case even goes to trial. This is one …

The days of interns being office gophers are a thing of the past. Employers need to be aware of the rules for interns.
Need someone to do your filing, sort your mail, fetch your coffee and other grunt work? An unpaid intern is not the answer. Many may remember summer intern experiences where they had hoped to learn about business and a particular industry but instead spent their time being the office errand boy or girl. Woe to the company that tries that now. New federal guidelines for internships were released in 2010 in response to the uptick in the number of unpaid internships over the last few years. The concern was that some employers were bringing in unpaid labor to help them through tough economic times. One of the issues is having unpaid interns perform tasks that displace paid workers. For example, if an intern performs work that the firm would…
