Police were called to Briarcliff High School on Thursday, May 10 after school officials reported a student had marijuana on campus, according to Briarcliff Manor Police. Police reports indicate the department received a call at 2:33 p.m. from the school on Thursday reporting the incident. Officers responded to the scene and arrested the 16-year-old teenager. The artwork of the winning student, Alessia Solimeo of Harrison, will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Started in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition recognizes exceptional high school artists. Each spring, students are invited to participate in the Congressional Art Competition by submitting their work to their local representative. Today, the Pleasantville Union Free School District residents went to the polls to cast votes for the 2012-13 schools budget as well as elect two to the board of education for the next three years. Budget vote: According to district projections, the adopted budget comes with a 1.99 percent tax rate increase for Town of Ossining residents and 6.61 percent tax rate increase for Town of Mount Pleasant residents. "It's always exciting to see the budget pass," said Board President Guy Rotondo. "When I started—I'm at the end of my term—the budget was $52.6 million and this year the budget that passed was $47.6 million." Author Dan Gutman shared not only his books with students at Todd Elementary School, but his challenges. “I got lots of rejection letters,” he told the children, “but did I give up? No!” He encouraged them to find what they loved to write about and stick with it. Author of The Baseball Card Adventure Series and The Weird School series, including Ms. Beard Is Weird, which will be released in June, Gutman took students through the writing process, including which genre to choose from, as well as the publishing process.
The public is invited to a night of dinner, arts and an original performance by students.
For the 300 or so students who live at the Jewish Child Care Association's (JCCA) Pleasantville Cottage School throughout the year, the therapeutic arts program offers a positive outlet. The $28,635,769 figure, according to a Pocantico Hills Central School District newsletter, is a 10.06 percent increase compared to the current year's adopted budget. The district projects a 12.52 percent tax levy increase and tax rate decreases for both Town of Mount Pleasant (-1.08 percent) and Town of Greenburgh (-2.18 percent) residents. The budget, which was approved by the school board on April 3, includes an increase in the district's tax certiorari reserve fund (total of $3,000,000)—$2,000,000 more than originally budgeted.
