A head-on collision on the Taconic Parkway in Yorktown early Saturday morning left one motorist dead, New York State Police told Patch.

A wrong-way driver—behind the wheel of a 2006 Honda Civic—was traveling south in the northbound lanes at about 12:20 a.m. when her car slammed into another driver in a 2007 Audi.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said, and the driver of the Audi was transported to Westchester Medical Center with leg injuries.

Police said the driver of the Audi, a female, had 5.3 grams of marijuana in her possession; authorities are awaiting toxicology reports.

Police and local fire officials said they are are unsure of where the wrong-way driver entered the Parkway.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, Yorktown Heights Fire Chief Chet Swirski told Patch.

"It was an unfortunate incident," Swirski said.

No names are being released until the dead driver's family is notified, police told Patch.

head-on collision on the Tappan Zee Bridge left one motorist dead on July 23, and earlier this week, a man was arrested after driving the wrong way on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
