More than 20 area fire departments took part in Pleasantville's annual Firefighters Parade Friday evening.

Crowds gathered in the streets to cheer on the volunteers, as well as area music groups as they made their way from the Mount Pleasant Public Library down to the Washington Avenue firehouse.

Pleasantville Mayor Peter Scherer called the event "the greatest night of the year" for the village.

Among the local participating departments were Pleasantville, Briarcliff Manor, Thornwood, Hawthorne, Valhalla, Pocantico Hills, Archville, Chappaqua, Millwood and Sleepy Hollow.

Other groups came from as far as Connecticut and upstate New York.

Grand Marshal John Brooks, a 38-year member of Pleasantville's volunteer department, led the parade.

Judges awarded a total of 33 trophies at the parade. Among the local winners (host Pleasantville not eligible) are:

  • Best Overall Department, Best Color Guarde with more than 25 firefighters — Ossining
  • Chief's Special Award in Memory of Jim Porter, Best Ambulance — Valhalla
  • Best Color Guard with 16 to 25 firefighters, Best Overall Antique — Millwood
  • Best Tower — Briarcliff Manor
  • Best Tower (over 10-years-old): Hawthorne
  • Best Fire Department Auxiliary — Thornwood
  • Longest Distance — Sandy Hook
