Father's Day Run to Honor Former Briarcliff Firefighter

Ron Jankowski enjoyed being active and giving back to the community.

Despite a busy job with IBM, volunteer obligations with the , a loving family life and time spent playing hockey, "He always made time for others in the community," recalled Chris Jankowski of his father, Ron.

So when the 53-year-old passed away in 2009, Ron Jankowski's fellow firefighters rallied to create the Ron Jankowski "92 Engine" Memorial Fund to benefit those also dedicated to making a difference in the community.

"We started with seminars for other firefighters to take," said Jankowski.

Now, the fund reaches out to students to apply for scholarships at , and Mahopac High School who have a "strong dedication to volunteering, community service and giving back," he explained.

And this Sunday, the fund is hosting its first Father's Day 5K (and 2.5K walk) as a new way to raise money for the scholarship fund. The races will begin and end at .

"We always keep adding on and watching the growth," said Jankowski. "We came up with this idea and started organizing back in February."

So far, about 280 participants are signed up for the race and organizers will register interested parties the day of the race, too.

"It's definitely going to be an annual event," said Jankowski, who will speak about his father prior to the start of the race at 8 a.m. sharp on Sunday. "He was the type of guy who would do anything for anyone."
