Coyote Sightings 'Common' in Briarcliff, Police Say

Some reported a daytime sighting of a coyote at Briarcliff High School this week.

Briarcliff Manor Police say they receive "about 10 calls a day" reporting coyote sightings, but in a village with many wooded areas, coyotes "are about as common as a deer or squirrel."

The photos above show a coyote that was spotted during the day Tuesday at Briarcliff High School.

Village police said there isn't much they can do about coyotes and residents should keep in mind that unless the animal is sick, "They are more scared of us than we are of them."

Earlier this month, a Briarcliff Manor resident recounted to Patch waking up to the sounds of coyotes killing a fawn in his yard.

Around this time last year, Lt. Donald Gorey noted a high number of coyote sightings in the village and reminded residents to stay away and keep pets and small children indoors when possible.

He advised calling a trapper if a coyote hangs around your property for several days.
