A Chestnut Hill Lane resident watched two "large coyotes" attack and kill a fawn in his yard this morning.

Howard Bailynson told Patch he awoke to an unpleasant noise.

"I was woken up by the fawn screaming a few minutes after 6 a.m. this morning," he explained in an email. "I had no idea what could make such a horrible noise. I looked out to the back yard and saw a single coyote attacking the fawn which was still screaming. That is when I called 911."

The Briarcliff Manor Police Department reported responding to the Chestnut Hill Lane (off of Sleepy Hollow Road) home after receiving the 6:05 a.m. call this morning.

Bailynson explained that he went downstairs after calling police and saw the coyotes and fawn had moved to the front yard where he observed "the fawn was still screaming, but was clearly defenseless and very badly hurt."

He called police again to tell them there were two coyotes and shortly after saw one run across the street.

"Seeing the two of them attacking the fawn together was very intense, the only way I can think to describe it is like something one would see on Animal Kingdom, a pack like intensity," Bailynson recalled.

The responding officer reported observing one coyote in the front yard, which fled when as he arrived.

"The officer saw the one running from my yard and followed it down the street," Bailynson said. "Unfortunately, it got away."

Police confirmed the fawn had been killed and notified the Department of Public Works to remove it from the yard.

According to police, coyotes are usually seen around dawn and dusk.

Bailynson described the two he saw as grey/brown and "both quite large...at least the size of an adult German Shepherd."

The most recent previous report of a coyote sighting in Briarcliff Manor was last week, police said, when a resident reported a sleeping baby coyote in the yard.
